Fuddruckers’ has left the building.
Greensboro’s Wendover location is gone.
Greensboro’s hamburger world enjoyed Fuddrucker’s for a while, but the competition in the local market proved too tough to survive. The product was good, or at least it still was the last time I was there, back in 2013.
I always enjoyed their unique build-your-own condiment bar. What a great idea. This was probably one of the things that led to their downfall. In a tough market the profits were gone with the leftover tomato slices. Around here price is trump. In Greensboro their next door neighbor is (was) the cheaper Steak’n Shake, and perhaps a hundred other restaurants line this Wendover strip.
The dated interior is now gutted. The folks next door are likely happy to see them gone, but should be worrying about who will come in the take their place. The wait shouldn’t be too long as the area seems irresistible to the corporate casual dining community.
Greensboro Hamburger Fantasy?
My first thought was that this location would make a great spot for something of good quality and decidedly outrageous. A few million dollars and this could be your fantasy.
Fuddrucker’s parent company filed bankruptcy after the disastrous recession late last decade, and was purchased by Luby’s. (LUB: NYSE) The Luby’s company owns several other brands, and 50+ Fuddrucker’s locations. Many more were franchised. I’ll take an educated guess and say the Wendover location was a franchisee owned shop. The company stores seem to be going strong, or at least OK, but franchise stores are closing. Somebody will miss them, I’m sure.
