Everyone wants to know where to find the best hamburger in Greensboro. So do I. In my quest I’ve had some good ones, but I can’t really identify a “best” in town. I will share my my opinion, but some of you will be disappointed.
There are three places I’d rate equally as Best-in-show. In no particular order my favorite of 52 burgers sampled last year were those found at The Worx, Lucky 32, and Mark’s. If I had to pick one today it’d be Mark’s. Tomorrow I’ll probably say Lucky 32, no wait, The Worx.
Look, I really haven’t done this to find a best. That was never my goal. I simply love hamburgers and wanted to learn my way around the town I’d left behind for over twenty years. I moved back here two years ago and now I am very much back up to speed, hamburger-wise at least.
The simple fact is no surprise. The most expensive burgers are generally the best. The little magic though is in finding the gaps. I am talking about the combinations of price and delishiousness that seem to defy economics.
As an example, my burger at Mark’s cost me 32 bucks. Holy crap you say. It ought to be good! We’ll it is, and the $11 glass of wine and 20% tip are just a part of the deal. Even at that price I do consider it a good value. ( You don’t know how cheap I am so you really don’t get how big this statement is.) The atmosphere, the service, the meal itself all have to be factored in the value equation. At Mark’s the beef is Kobe, with goat cheese and truffle oil on the fries. Wine, divine. Damn, just typing this make my mouth water.
At the other end of the price spectrum there is nothing in this town to top a 99 cent original Biff Burger at Beef Burger. The Biff sauce is magic. Immortalized in the movie Bull Durham and a million baby boomers, Beef Burger is the bomb.
The top restaurants around town commonly charge $11-12 for a nice burger, and some are worth it. The three above certainly are. I’ll be adding other to my list soon. Subscribe and you’ll be sure not to miss it.
Next time Ill tell you where to get a burger that’s nearly as good as these, but at half the price.
